WHAT IS KIVA U?
KIVA U is a movement which harnesses the energy, passion and creativity of youth leaders and educators to address the world's critical problems through microfinance. From poverty alleviation to clean energy, from child nutrition to access to clean water--microfinance is a powerful force for change. KIVA U brings together students and teachers in a virtual community where they can access tools and resources, to create opportunity for people around the world.
Partnering with Citi, KIVA U will connect and mobilize microfinance clubs at high schools and colleges across the country to further the expansion of financial inclusion and broaden access for traditionally underserved communities.
Through experiential learning, digital collaboration, KIVA's crowd funding, and the power of convening, KIVA U will empower students and educators to become better informed, empowered, and active agents of change.
KIVA U SUMMIT - FALL 2013
In October 2013, KIVA U and Citi brought together approximately 150 high school students, college students and educators from around the world to put microfinance in action. The mission was to equip and empower all of these people to mobilize their friends, families, classrooms and communities to confront global poverty.
During the Summit, Kelia Williams and Landon Hawthorne, seniors at Southwind High School working on the Microfinance in Action grant, had a unique opportunity to present "Understanding and Messaging about Poverty in High School." One of the results of their presentation was a student group collaboration on definitions of poverty. Below are the results from an amazing group of students who will be the future to lead our fight against poverty on a global scale.
